4,500 Nigerian musicians to get N11,000 each as Coronavirus relief fund from COSON

The Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) has announced a N50 million financial relief package for all Nigerian artistes as the nation continues to battle the Coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement released, President of COSON, Tony Okoroji, said since the beginning of the pandemic and the eventual lockdown of some states, himself and other board members have received calls from many artistes who are desperate for any kind of assistance as they have been affected by the pandemic and the current lockdown which has also  stopped entertainment activities across the country.

He said the orgaization's board has therefore approved the release of 50 Million Naira to be shared amongst about 4,500 members on the society’s register as at May 19th, 2019 as an Anti-Corona Emergency Relief Distribution from COSON. Each member is to receive N11, 000.

“I have personally received calls from several members of COSON who are desperate for immediate assistance of any kind. Other members of our Board have received similar messages. At a time like this, COSON must be responsible and responsive to the needs of our members and we should do everything we can to help them wade through these hard times. That is the very reason why COSON was set up.
I am proud of the quick response of members of the COSON Board who showed great understanding that we must be our brothers’ keeper at a time like this.
Starting immediately, with the co-operation of the banks, each qualified member of COSON will receive a modest sum of eleven thousand naira in what we have termed Anti-Coronavirus Emergency Relief (ACER) General Distribution. We are able to do this because of the deft management of our resources. We wish we could do more. I however believe that most people are aware of what we have been through in recent times. Let me thank the COSON management team of Vincent Adawaisi, Isa Aruna and Anthony Imuse who burnt the midnight oil to ensure that the decision of the Board is executed with dispatch” he said

On outstanding Specific Distributions, the COSON Chairman said

“Every member of the Board is very eager that all outstanding specific distributions should be paid without any delay. The issue was prominent in our discussions on the emergency relief distribution. While the Board and the General Assembly have approved the specific distributions, it is common knowledge that COSON funds in two banks are frozen. The money for the specific distributions is domiciled in the frozen accounts. The money is safe. Not one Naira is missing.
It is also common knowledge that we have gone to court to have the accounts unfrozen and immediately that happens, the money will be paid. In any case, all those entitled to Specific distribution will also receive the Anti-Coronavirus Emergency Relief (ACER) General Distribution.
It is unfortunate that it is some of our colleagues that requested the banks to freeze the accounts which has brought this suffering to innocent COSON members and even to those who took the action. That is why we need to be very careful about what we say and what we do.
I hope that we will use this very challenging period to think deeply. We have built COSON to be there for musicians through thick and thin. We work hard to ensure that COSON takes care of musicians while they are alive and celebrates them even in death. Has anyone forgotten how in an unprecedented manner we buried the late Ras Kimono like a king?
Said the COSON Chairman, “Some people may think that because things are going well for them today, they will never need COSON. I have been in the industry long enough to know that the day will come when each of us needs an institution like COSON. When I hear people in our industry call on government to clamp down on COSON or that those who owe us money should not pay us, I ask why anyone would choose to urinate into a well from which he might soon draw water to drink when he is desperately thirsty”.

Concluded Chief Okoroji

“I know that I cannot please everyone but I am working hard every day to lift up the musicians of Nigeria, promote and defend our industry and provide visible solutions to the problems of each of us. I have absolutely no interest in the cantankerous name calling and rabid character assassination which many appear to dwell in and which do not provide even one
cup of garri for any Nigerian artiste or one cube of Maggifor his pot of soup”.

Taraba man arrested in Enugu for the alleged assault and rape of a 68-year-old woman

Taraba man arrested in Enugu for the alleged assault and rape of a 68-year-old woman
A young man from Jalingo, Taraba state, has been arrested after he allegedly raped a 68-year-old woman in Enugu state.

Abba Kyari Mohammed is accused of raping the woman on Saturday, April 4, in Umulungbe Community, Udi Local Government Area, Enugu State.

The victim and another woman had gone into the farms to pick cashew nuts when they were allegedly attacked by the Mohammed. He allegedly used a stick to flog them.

One of the women escaped and ran to alert the villagers who came out to the farm in their numbers.

Mohammed was still on the farm when they arrived and they beat him up. He would have been lynched if security operatives had not intervened.

The villagers allege that Mohammed raped the 68-year-old woman before they arrived. They also accused him of being a Fulani herdsman.

An eye witness, one Chikeokwu, said the women were attacked by three men but only Abba Kyari Mohammed was caught. He added that he was drinking at a pub opposite the police division at Umulungbe when the suspect was brought to the police.

He said: "The rape victim is from Lett Village. They were two in the farm when the herdsmen attacked them. One of the women ran away."

He added that the woman left on the farm "was in a pool of blood when she was rescued."

The eye witness also claims that the leaders of the Fulani herdsmen camping in the community were summoned. However, they denied knowing the suspect and claimed that he and his gang, who were at large, might have sneaked into the community.

Taraba man arrested in Enugu for the alleged assault and rape of a 68-year-old woman

However, the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe dismissed the claims of the attacker being a Fulani herdsman.

The suspect was arrested and taken for treatment for the wounds inflicted on him by the villagers. The 68-year-old woman was also taken to the hospital for treatment.

Ndukwe added that the suspect has been transferred from 9th Mile Police Division to the State Criminal Investigation Department for thorough investigation and prosecution.

The administrator of Ojebe Ogene Development Centre in Udi LGA and native of Umulungbe, Mike Ngwuede, confirmed the incident, saying the police had taken over the matter.

He said: "I thank the Nigeria Police for quick intervention. It is unfortunate that as the world battles COVID-19, some miscreants can still commit this act."

The chairman of Udi LGA, Ifeanyi Agu, said the act was condemnable.
"Prior to my swearing in as council chairman, I consulted widely to ensure absolute security of lives and property in Udi LGA. We have the state’s security committee that has been very active. We also have our Forest Guards and neighbourhood watch." he said

"I personally advocate farming for our people because of the relative peace in our area. But what happened indicates that we need to re-strengthen our security apparatus to ensure that such never occurred again."

Administrators at the Bronx Zoo said one of its tigers tested positive for the coronavirus.

Nadia, a 4-year-old female Malayan tiger, was infected by a zoo employee who was caring for it and other tigers and was "asymptomatically infected with the virus or before that person developed symptoms," according to the Wildlife Conservation Society, which runs the zoo.⁣

The tiger's sister, Azul, two Amur tigers and three African lions all developed a dry cough and were expected to recover, according to administrators.⁣

"Though they have experienced some decrease in appetite, the cats at the Bronx Zoo are otherwise doing well under veterinary care and are bright, alert, and interactive with their keepers," the WCS said in a statement.⁣

The other tigers living in the zoo's Tiger Mountain exhibit and the feline animals residing in other sections of the zoo haven't shown any signs of symptoms, administrators said.⁣

"Appropriate preventive measures are now in place for all staff who are caring for them, and the other cats in our four WCS zoos, to prevent further exposure of any other of our zoo cats," the WCS said.
