FG and ASUU disagree on payment platform for N30bn allowances

The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities have again disagreed on the payment platform which will be used in disbursing the salary arrears and the N30 billion earned allowance of university lecturers.

While the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige offered to pay the salary arrears and the N30 billion Earned Allowances of the university lecturers through the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System platform at the meeting which ended in a deadlock on Wednesday October 22, ASUU delegation led by its National President, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi reportedly insisted that lecturers would not enrol on the government salary platform.

It is expected that both parties will reconvene on Monday October 26, to decide on the platform for the disbursement of the funds pledged by the FG.

Recall that the federal government had agreed to pay N40 billion, being the pending Earned Academic Allowance of the university teachers overdue since November 2019. N30 billion would be paid on or before November 6, while the remaining N10 billion would be spread equally over two tranches to be paid in May 2021 and February 2022.

Nigerian singer, Falz got interviewed by CNN's Christiane Amanpour about the #EndSARS protest today October 21.

The singer who gave an overview of why SARS was created, also outlined the grieviances of the Nigerian youths against the controversial police unit which is centered on "profiling". Falz further pointed out that the major issue surrounding the disbandment of the police, is that same claims have been made continously over the years.

The frontliner of the #EndSARS protesters who was also asked if he's afraid to die like others who are scared to speak in front of the camera, stated that he isn't. According to Falz, he can easily get killed by other things in Nigeria which includes; unemployment, poor health care system and  bad roads.

Falz added that it is disheartening that the Nigerian government is dragging its feet in implementing some of the reforms it claims it's leading.

Lagos State Govt condemns looting of Maza Maza warehouse, says distribution of COVID-19 palliatives was halted due to #EndSARS protest

Lagos State Govt condemns looting of Maza Maza warehouse, says distribution of COVID-19 palliatives was halted due to #EndSARS protest

The Lagos State Government has condemned the vandalisation of the warehouse at Mazamaza housing the food palliative packages donated to the government by the Private Sector Coalition against COVID-19 (CACOVID) group.

Recall that a mob on Thursday, October 22, vandalised the warehouse where COVID-19 palliatives are kept at Maza Maza in Amuwo Odofin Local Govt Area and looted palliatives. The warehouse is located on Benster Crescent, popularly known as Monkey village.

A statement signed by the Acting Commissioner, Agriculture, Abisola Olusanya, said the items belong to the Southwest, contrary to social media reports that they are all for Lagos, adding that distribution was on-going but had to be halted due to #EndSARS protests.

"Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had on September 22nd 2020, formally taken receipt of the food palliatives from the CACOVID team meant for distribution to the indigent," the statement reads.

"The State had repackaged its share of the consignment and was distributing it before the protests that have affected activities in the State. The repackaging was being done to account for every beneficiary, according to the agreement with the CACOVID Group, which monitored the process,"

"The warehouse in question is not State-owned and its usage was made available to the CACOVID group. The distribution was on-going but had to be halted due to protests, before the invasion of the warehouse today.

"For effective distribution of the food palliatives, groups such as Transport Unions, Ethnic Groups, Religious Associations, Artisans and Tradesmen Association, Marketmen and Women Association, People Living with Disabilities, Orphanages and Old Peoples’ Homes among others were being used as the distribution channels to their members.

"The State Government, however, regrets the invasion of the warehouse and appreciates the support offered by the CACOVID group to the citizenry of Lagos."

Governor Sanwo-Olu denies ordering the killing of #EndSARS protesters as he visits victims of Lekki Toll Gate Shooting

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had denied ordering the killing of #EndSARS protesters as he visited some victims of Lekki toll gate shooting.

Sharing photos from his visit to the hospitals where some victims of the shootings are being treated, the Lagos state Governor described it as "toughest night of our lives as forces beyond our direct control have moved to make notes in our history".

He insisted that the decision to impose curfew was borne out of concern for innocent protesters and the entire citizenry, as it will be foolhardy for a leader to try to protect his citizens and still turn around to put their lives at risk.

Sanwo-Olu who disclosed that this is not time to trade blames, further disclosed that there are 10 patients at the General Hospital in Lagos Island, 11 at Reddington hospital and 4 at Vedic hospital with mild to moderate levels of injuries. He further revealed that while 2 are receiving intensive medical care,  3 patients have been discharged. He also promised to take care of the medical bills of victims of the shootings.

He wrote;

This may be the toughest night of our lives as forces beyond our direct control have moved to make notes in our history, but we will face it.
As a Father and Governor, I watched in anguish the unacceptable event that occurred last night at the Lekki tollgate.

The decision to impose curfew was borne out of concern for innocent protesters and the entire citizenry of our dear state. It will be foolhardy for a leader to try to protect his citizens and still turn around to put their lives at risk.

However, this is not the time to trade blames. We will take it in our stride and move.

I paid a visit to all the victims of the unfortunate shooting incident at the various hospitals where they are being urgently attended to.

There are currently 10 patients at the General Hospital in Lagos Island, 11 at Reddington hospital and 4 at Vedic hospital with mild to moderate levels of injuries, while 2 are receiving intensive medical care. And 3 patients have been discharged.
I implored the attending doctors to give them the best care, while we cover all their medical bills.

We are working with the Federal Govt to harmonize and stabilize all security operations while prioritizing the lives of the residents we swore to protect and serve.

I would also be giving a statewide address in a few hours.

We will come out stronger.
