Atletico Madrid complete signing of striker Luis Suarez from Barcelona for only £5.5m

Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of striker Luis Suarez from La Liga rivals Barcelona for only £5.5m

The Uruguay international, 33, had one more year to run on the contract he signed with Barcelona in 2016, but was told by new head coach Ronald Koeman that he was no longer required at the Camp Nou.

On Friday, Suarez had a medical at Atletico before signing a two-year deal with the club.

A statement from Atletico read: 'We welcome to our team one of the world’s most prolific strikers, who gives his all on the pitch and has proved his quality on the most demanding of stages.'

He arrives at Atletico following the departure of Alvaro Morata, who rejoined Juventus earlier this week.

Suarez arrived at Barcelona from Liverpool in a £65million fee and has won four LaLiga titles, four Spanish Cups, the 2015 Champions League, and Club World Cup titles with Barcelona. He scored 195 goals and provided 113 assists in 283 outings for the club before his exit.

The announcement comes after Lionel Messi launched a fresh attack on the club's hierarchy for the way the club treated his friend Luis Suárez and pushed him out of the club.

Music producer, Superwozzy was arrested with charms and Indian hemp - Lagos police reacts to harassment allegation (video)

The Lagos state police command has reacted to allegation of some of its operatives harassing music producer, Superwozzy and his friends.

The police debunked the allegation of excessive use of power and attempted extortion, and further urged the general public to regard the video as mischievous, baseless and an attempt to paint the police black as the police recovered Indian hemp and charms from the suspects.

Narrating what happened, the Lagos state police said in a statement by its spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi;

The Lagos State Police command has come across a trending video alleging the police attached to Ogudu Area command of Lagos State of harassment, excessive use of power and attempted extortion, released by some young men today, Friday, 25th September, 2020.

The Command wishes to debunk the allegations and urge the general public to regard the video as mischievous, baseless and an attempt to paint the police black.

To set the record straight, on Friday 25/9/2020 at about 9.30am, a team of Anti-Crime patrol from Area H, Ogudu, intercepted a Chevrolet saloon car with Reg. No SMK 436 DE, with three occupants, on Ogudu Expressway, Lagos State. The glasses, front and back, of the vehicle are fully tinted which aroused the suspicion of the patrol team; and efforts to get the occupants identified was rebuffed, as they refused to come down or wind down the side glasses of the car.

In a bid to detect and identify the occupants of the vehicle for security reasons, coupled with the Police's experience on criminals' modus operandi, the patrol team called for reinforcement and eventually, the three occupants were arrested and the vehicle towed to the station at Ogudu. The occupants were identified as (1) Okoh miracle,m,18 year old (2) Awodoyin Mayokun, m, 24 year old, and (3) Shonaike Adebola, m, age 20 years.

During the search on them and the car, the police recovered a wrap of weed suspected to be Indian hemp and some charms.

The Commissioner of Police has, however, ordered for thorough investigation of the incident, while appealing to Lagosians, particularly, the youths, to always respect the law and surrender for check at the instance of the police.

He also reiterated that in as much as the police will uphold the rule of law, protect human rights and dignity, it will not condone dissemination or spreading of fake, unfounded or malicious news to malign the image of the Nigeria Police or create security threats in the state.

Osun polytechnic student found dead in his apartment (photo)

A student of Osun State Polytechnic, Festus Adedoyin Ewejobi, who was declared missing on Tuesday, September 15, was found dead with his body mutilated in his apartment in Iree, a community in the state on Saturday, September 19.

According to The Nation, a search party was launched shortly after Festus's whereabouts couldn't be determined on Tuesday September 15. It was while the search for Festus was in progress that neighbors perceived a stench from his room, fuelling suspicion that he might have been harmed. The door leading to his apartment was forced open only to find his decomposed body riddled with machete cuts.

“We initially thought that the deceased was out of town when he was not seen or sighted in the neighbourhood for about four days.

But we became worried because he would always leave a clue as to his whereabouts whenever he was going out. Hence, we raised the alarm when his whereabouts were unknown.

Our worries about his safety heightened when we perceived a stench coming from his room. We forced our way into his room only to find his mutilated body.

We reported the matter to the police divisional headquarters in the community and men of the station invited local government officials to evacuate the body. Family members of the deceased have also been contacted.

From the look of things, his assailants probably trailed him to his room and killed him with a machete.’’ a resident said

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the state police command, Yemisi Opalola, said one Opeyemi Adeshina, a student of Osun State Polytechnic, reported to the police station in the community that they perceived an offensive odour from the apartment of Festus Adedoyin Ewejobi.

She said the police swung into action and forced their way into Festus's room where they found his decomposing body.

“The police broke the padlock of the mini flat where Ewejobi’s room was situated and found the decomposing corpse of Ewejobi. We contacted the local government for evacuation.'' she said

She added that his body was released to his family and that he has since been buried.

“No foul play was suspected because the entire body was examined. The family of the deceased was contacted and he was buried the day after the corpse was discovered,” she said

Anambra CP summons DPOs, others over rise in cultism

A 35-year-old pregnant woman, Risikat Saliman, was shot dead during a bloody clash between suspected cult groups at Aleke community in Ikorodu, Lagos State on Thursday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that dozens of suspected cultists invaded Aleke community market around 8p.m. and started shooting sporadically, killing the woman.

The Baale of Aleke, Chief Adeniyi Okemati, said the hoodlums had gunned down the mother of two before the arrival of policemen from at Imota Division.

“I don’t know why they came and be terrorising our people.

“We want Lagos government to intervene so that we can collectively curb the menace to enable my people sleep with their two eyes closed,” the Baale said.

He appealed to the Lagos State Government to intervene as a matter of urgency for the safety of lives and property in the community.

Okemati also urged residents to collaborate with local vigilante teams to curb insecurity in the area.

The brother of the deceased, Mr Babatunde Saliman, told NAN that the hoodlums arrived at the market around 8: p.m. and started shooting sporadically and eventually the bullet hit her on the back.

“I met her at the market lying in a pool of blood; some of her friends who came to the scene said that she was pregnant.

“Her body has been released by the police and was taken to Ikorodu General Hospital mortuary in preparation to transport her to her home town in Kwara State,” he said.

He called on the police to investigate the killing and ensure perpetrators of the evil act that took the life of his sister were brought to justice.

Police Public Relations Officer in Lagos State, Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the killing, said that the cult clash was between “Aiye and Eiye” confraternity.

He added that policemen have restored normalcy to the area while the matter had been taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID)Panti, Lagos.

According to him, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Hakeem Odumosu, has zero tolerance for cultism and warned that the police will deal ruthlessly with anyone found culpable.

“The woman was killed by a stray bullet when the two rival cults of ‘Eiye’ and ‘Aiye’ engaged each other in a supremacy battle.

“The Commissioner of Police in the state, Hakeem Odumosu, has zero tolerance for cultism. Cultism breeds various other crimes wherever they exist,” he said.

Nigeria added to Wikipedia's list of failed states

Nigeria added to Wikipedia

Wikipedia's list of failed states has been updated and Nigeria is now one of the countries on the list.

The free web-based encyclopedia project which contains information on a wide variety of subjects, described a failed state as a political body that has disintegrated to a point where basic conditions and responsibilities of a sovereign government no longer function properly.

It further added that a state can also fail if the government loses its legitimacy even if it is performing its functions properly. For a stable state, it is necessary for the government to enjoy both effectiveness and legitimacy. Likewise, when a nation weakens and its standard of living declines, it introduces the possibility of total governmental collapse.

Lady ignores her dad, goes home with the man she met at isolation center in Oyo

Covid-19 Oyo state

There was mild drama at the Oyo State isolation centre Saturday, August 8, when a recovered COVID-19 patient refused to go home with her father, choosing instead to go with a soldier she met at the isolation centre.

About 20 people were discharged from the Infectious Disease Centre in Olodo, Ibadan, Oyo State, after they were treated for COVID-19.

Relatives of those discharged were outside waiting for them but one particular woman had two people waiting to pick her up. Her father, a pastor, was one of those waiting to take her home. A soldier she met at the isolation centre who got discharged before her was also waiting for her on a motorcycle and she ignored her father and went with the soldier.

According to TheCable, the pastor approached the soldier but after about five minutes of discussion, the lady was taken away on the motorcycle while her father left the centre in annoyance.

The father told TheCable that his daughter began exhibiting a wayward attitude after graduating from school.

“She is my second child but after her graduation from the school of statistics, she refused to come home. I only got to know that she had been isolated at the centre through a relative she confided in. I am a man of God and I will continue to pray for her,” he said.

A discharged patient told the publication: “Before the soldier was discharged, he and the girl were very close. They mingled together.”
